Roads Authority (RA) board of directors has appointed Engineer Ammiel Champiti as new chief executive officer.

RA board chairperson Matilda Matabwa confirmed the appointment in an interview yesterday, saying Champiti will report for duty on February 12 2024.

On his part, Champiti said he will only be able to grant a media interview after reporting for duties.

“I will only be able to speak next week. Please, speak to RA’s public relations office. They have all the details,” he said.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Champiti holds a master’s degree in organisational management and a bachelor of science in civil engineering from The Polytechnic, then a constituent college of the University of Malawi, but now an autonomous Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences.

The profile said Champiti is a registered engineer in Malawi and Zambia with a track record of extensive design and project management spanning over 26 years.

New broom: Champiti

Reads the profile: “The years are characterised with agile and productive project planning and implementation methodologies.

“I have managed over 20 notable highway design and construction supervision assignments. Design projects have ranged from 20 kilometres [km] to 180 km long with bridge and drainages structures of varying complexities and sizes.”

Champiti has filled a position that was tentatively held by Francis Dimu, but officially he has replaced Engineer Emmanuel Matapa who left in October 2021.

Matapa had replaced Engineer Trevor Hiwa who was removed in June 2017 for allegedly awarding a K217 million World Bank contract to a family company, Infracon Limited. However, the court last week cleared Hiwa and subsequently acquitted him on the charge of awarding of the contract.
